Pablo Picasso is famously known for pioneering the Cubist movement, not Impressionism.

While Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Édouard Manet were all key figures in the Impressionist era of the late 19th century—characterized by loose brushwork, vivid colors, and a focus on light—Picasso broke dramatically from that tradition.

His Blue Period (1901–1904) and Rose Period (1904–1906) were deeply emotive but still largely representational. Then came Cubism, co-developed with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional forms and represented subjects from multiple angles at once. This movement laid the groundwork for much of modern abstract art.

Impressionists aimed to capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere; Picasso sought to deconstruct reality altogether.
