The Inca civilization, one of the most sophisticated pre-Columbian societies in South America, is best known for building Machu Picchu, a remarkable city nestled high in the Andes Mountains of modern-day Peru.

Constructed in the 15th century, Machu Picchu served as a royal estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti and is considered an architectural marvel for its complex stone construction that required no mortar, as well as its intricate agricultural terraces.

The city was abandoned during the Spanish conquest and remained largely hidden until its rediscovery by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Today, Machu Picchu stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a testament to the ingenuity of Inca engineering and culture.
