Herbert Hoover was President at the start of the Great Depression.
Herbert Hoover was known as the "Great Humanitarian" due to the fact that he saved over 10 million lives during World War I as he led the efforts to send food supplies to a devastated Europe. Before the Great Depression hit, he repeatedly warned of the speculative nature of the stock market at that time. No one paid heed to his warnings and the collapse of the stock market plunged the country into economic chaos. Despite his best efforts, he could not regain his popularity due to the long bread lines and lost re-election to Franklin Roosevelt in 1928.
