Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and is the world's tallest free-standing mountain measuring in at 19,340 feet. The word "Kilimanjaro" aptly describes it, with the first syllable "Kilima" meaning "mountain" in Swahili and the 2nd syllable is "Njaro" meaning "whiteness" in Chagga (referring to its snowy peak). Free-standing mountains like Kilimanjaro are made as a result of volcanic activity rather than tectonic plates pushing up against each. In fact, there are 3 volcanoes on the mountain itself. The first volcano is called Kibo, which is the tallest cone and is also where Kilimanjaro's summit lies. Mawenzi is the 2nd volcano with a craggy peak. Finally, the 3rd volcano is called Shira which has collapsed into the Shira Plateau on the western side of the mountain.
