The first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights
Contrary to popular belief the document was not created out of the whole cloth. It was modeled after the Virginia Declaration of Rights that was penned by George Mason in 1776. There were 14 copies of the document commissioned so that each state could have their own copy, in addition to the federal government’s copy. Somehow, four states have lost their individual copies: Georgia, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Did you know that there is a “Bill of Rights Day”? This patriotic but obscure holiday is celebrated on December 15. Not everything that was originally proposed for the Bill of Rights. One of the failed amendments would have resulted with there being around 6,000 members of the House of Representatives instead of the 435 that reside in that body today.
